When installing a manufacturing system it is critical to consider the end user experience. This is never more important than at the data collection phase.
If you want to collect data accurately, at the sharp end, you must make the system easy to use, and easy to correct. The people who are feeding the system with data have work to do. They don’t consider supplying a computer system with data to be their number one priority. If you don’t make the system work for them, they’ll make sure it doesn’t work for you.
Think about what matters and what doesn’t. If you ask people to account for every screw and washer they’ll give that the same priority as the expensive parts that maybe really matter. If they make a mistake, is it easy to correct ? What do you think happens if it’s not ?
Do you handle fluids ? What happens when there’s a small quantity left in a bag ? Do they use it, or does it go in the bin ? If they use it - what about batch traceability ?
Any manufacturing system needs to fit it’s circumstance. That’s why so many packaged systems have failed. It’s not because they aren’t perfectly good systems, in the appropriate environment.
To design and implement effective manufacturing systems, it makes all the difference to have been there.
